TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:As a consequence of the decision of the House of Representatives (DPR) to ratify the United Nations convention on the protection of migrant workers, the Law on the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (UU TKI) Abroad must be revised.

We will work hard to lobby the DPR so that the revision of the UU TKI will be in line with the spirit of the UN convention, said executive director of Migrant Care Anis Hidayah on Saturday.

Unfortunately, based on the draft revision currently in circulation, the hope is still far from a reality. Anis criticized a number of points in the draft revision to Law No. 39 of 2004 because there are still loopholes allowing violations to the rights of Indonesian migrant workers abroad.

For example, there is a provision that the government will only protect migrants with official documents, she said. According to Anis, the article should not be there. Those who are sent abroad without documents are victims. They should still be protected, she said.

In addition, the revised law does not give maximum protection to female migrant workers. They are actually the ones who are the most vulnerable to torture, she said. Nearly all migrant workers murdered are female.
